Papers related to the military service of Archibald Thompson, an Oshkosh, Wis. soldier who served as the Commissary Sergeant of Company D, Eighth Wisconsin Infantry during the Civil War. Included are a photocopied and transcribed letter and diary. Topics covered in the letters include the importance of receiving mail, activities while on leave, issuing rations, weather, various hotels at which he stayed, boating on the Yazoo River, and the opening of the Battle of Vicksburg. Also included are photocopies of attempts by Thompson's mother to receive a mother's pension The photographs show Thompson in a gray state militia uniform.
